My life changed 30 years ago after reading “Think and Grow Rich,” the book researched for 20 years by Napoleon Hill, which by the way is based on Biblical principles. He teaches how our thoughts control our actions, and can make or break us. This week is our 10th week of studying the 12 Things That Make Men Rich researched by Hill; we talk about the need for “Complete Self-Control.” The scripture: For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” 2nd Timothy 1:7

Of the many definitions for the word discipline which also means self-control, I like this version which says “a specific character or pattern of behavior, especially training that produces moral or mental improvement.”

Do we take the time to think about what we’re thinking as a pattern, or do we allow our minds to wander? We must control our thinking! Thinking is when the Lord molds us like clay, if we listen and do what He is telling us.

For me, 30 years ago, discipline meant working on my business daily; it was effective job search techniques and strategies. Research, visits to resume writing services to see what they offered was a must. In fact, I contacted prominent companies, and went in as a client to see what they offered.

Got exactly what I needed; a book on effective job search techniques and strategies; was informed of what they offered to clients and the type of resume writing services they offered. It worked out just fine for me.

What if I had not exercised discipline or self-control, determined to find out all I needed to know about my competitors? We opened offering similar services for a lot less. Without knowledge of my competitors, we would not have made it very far!

We had lots of repeat customers who often said, “Every time you write me a resume, I get the job!” We also trained our clients during mock interviews, causing them to think about obvious questions well in advance of the interview.

The Holy Spirit, not someone else, can advise you on what moves to make unless they are role models, with a proven track record in specific areas. It takes self-control and discipline to remain steadfast. Family and friends often get in our business to tell us what moves to make next in our lives.

Plans for your life must not come from someone unplanned. Their experiences don’t compare, they will see life from a different point of view.

Bishop T.D. Jakes recounted this story on the Oprah Winfrey Network about the giraffe and turtle; how self-discipline helps us know for ourselves; we feel sure and confident about our next moves.

Here’s what he said about the giraffe; “A giraffe must eat from trees; they cannot hold their heads down to eat or they will choke to death.” In fact, to look down is difficult for the giraffe.

Having enough blood pressure to pump blood to the brain when the giraffe’s neck is extended upward is one challenge, but when the animal lowers its head it risks injury due to excessive blood pressure. To counter this, giraffes have a pressure-regulating system which restricts the amount of blood that rushes toward the brain when the giraffe lowers its head.

To look down to a turtle’s level could cause death for the giraffe! Why would a giraffe take advice from a turtle anyway?  The turtle can only see what’s there in the grass in close proximity. It doesn’t know what may be within mere feet. These two are not in the same league. Can you imagine a giraffe being dim-witted enough to listen to something that a turtle advised it to do? That’s how we look when we behave in this manner. Exercise free will and self-control over your life.
