(Politico) – Ben Carson’s steady rise in the polls continued Tuesday, with the retired neurosurgeon running nearly even with Donald Trump in the latest CBS News/New York Times national survey, within the margin of error.

Trump maintained his lead over the Carson, 27 percent to 24 percent, though Carson’s finish reflects an 17-point jump from July, similar to the results of an ABC News/Washington Post poll from Monday that showed him experiencing a 14-point increase during the same period. In July, Trump took in 24 percent.

Behind Carson, the gulf between candidates widens considerably.
