Houston’s 23rd annual Igbofest brings back the Ijele Masquerade, a nearly 13-foot masked spirit and one of the most revered traditions in Igbo culture, to Discovery Green on Saturday, Oct. 24.

The Defender talks with Fred Ogbutor, board chairman of the Ndi-Ichie Cultural Association, about why the Ijele traditionally dances last, how it is taken apart in Nigeria, shipped across the Atlantic and rebuilt by hand in Houston, and why passing the tradition to Igbo children born and raised here is the heart of the festival.

In this video, you’ll hear about:
– What the Ijele Masquerade is and why it holds such significance
– UNESCO’s 2009 recognition of the Ijele as Intangible Cultural Heritage
– Rebuilding a 13-foot masquerade by hand in Houston
– Why the Ijele has become the masquerade young people want to see
– Keeping Igbo culture alive for the next generation in the diaspora

Coach Tremaine Jackson in a Houston Defender interview discussing Prairie View A&M football team culture and turnaround.

The Defender’s Terrance Harris asks Prairie View A&M head football coach Tremaine Jackson what’s behind the Panthers’ recent wins.

Jackson credits a culture change: getting “grown people with bad attitudes” out of the building and surrounding players with people who want them to succeed. “The one group of people you cannot fool is kids,” he says. He also talks about a battered and bruised roster heading into a week off, and how he plans to keep his team hardened for the stretch ahead.
