1927 newsreel clip on African American history and contributions, presented by The New Journal and Guide.

By Willie M. King

According to an article in the Christian Science Monitor, “It is commonly recognized that the influence which is exerted on the young people by the history they are taught in school and colleges is a powerful force for molding national and international understandings and their opposites.” Surely we may agree that the history of any race or nation is very helpful in bringing about better relationships between nations of the world without distortion and prejudice. We as a race should seek the truth about our history and should be proud of the truth after we have discovered it.

When we find the truth in teaching and studying of Negro History, no true Negro can refrain from being proud of his ancestors and his race. Though we have emerged from a race of bondage, mutilated without any racial consciousness, and made to feel inferior physically, mentally and morally, we have a history worth knowing, a history rich in religious, educational and industrial developments any race under the sun might be justly proud.

Our history is intertwined with that of the White world. Most of the history which our children have learned in the schools and colleges has been taught from a biased or prejudiced standpoint. But thanks to men like Carter G. Woodson, John R. Hawkins, S.W. Rutherford and other seekers who are searching for the truth in Negro History and bringing it to light. Only by this means can we and others appreciate the Negro’s contributions not to America, alone but to the world
