Nigerian President Ill in London, Advised Rest

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — An official says Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is “indisposed” in London and doctors have advised he “rest for a few days.”

Special adviser Reuben Abati says in a statement that Jonathan missed the opening Thursday of a meeting of the country’s Honorary International Investors’ Council.

He said Jonathan assures Nigerians that his condition is “nothing serious” and that medical attention was sought only as a precaution.

Jonathan, 56, is expected to contest 2015 elections that already have caused a rift in his governing party. This month, he delayed presenting the annual budget in a sign of disagreements with many legislators. Nigeria confronts an Islamic uprising in the northeast that has killed thousands. On Wednesday, legislators approved Jonathan’s request to extend a state of emergency there for another six months.
