United Peace Rally at Earvin “Magic” Johnson Park
Hundreds rallied at Magic Johnson Park for peace, honoring Trayvon Martin and demanding an end to violence. Peace, unity, and healing were the calls to action.
A crowd of 300 to 400 people, including low riders, peace-riders and others attended the Peace Rally on Sunday at Magic Johnson Park in South Los Angeles. “We’re here in the name of Trayvon Martin,” said Minister Tony Muhammad. “We’re here to show the world that we have to also do something to heal the black-on-black crimes, the brown-on-black crimes and the brown-on-brown crimes, which lead to murder. We’re here in the name of Trayvon Martin and the 25,000 who lost their life in the last 20 years to gang violence.”
Sheriff Lee Baca spoke in the same terms. “The message today is a celebration of peace and that we’re all united in peace, and we’re paying tribute to Trayvon Martin and his family . . . .”
Congresswoman Janice Hahn said: “I came out today to support the thousands of riders and thousands of others who are really calling for peace and unity in this nation. We’re outraged at the senseless, tragic death of Trayvon Martin.”
Also present were Compton Mayor Aja Brown and a Compton City Council member.
