Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.) called on officials to bring in the National Guard to secure the Capitol. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi eventually did just that. “I’ve never seen anyone be able to breach the Capitol like this,” Bass stated. “The President of the United States incited this riot, and someone needs to go over to Pennsylvania Avenue and arrest him.”

Congresswoman Maxine Waters is looking for answers to exactly how the U.S. Capitol’s security was breached by an angry violent mob of Donald Trump’s supporters on January 6. A large crowd that attended the “stop the steal” rally in Washington, D.C. at The White House, heard a speech from the President that included several words to incite the crowd.

Though President-elect Biden won the presidency by seven million votes and Trump’s attorney’s offered no evidence to verify any issues with the election count, Trump has insisted on lying to his supporters and claiming the election was “stolen.”

“We will never give up, we will never concede,” Trump said at the rally before the Capitol was attacked. The rally had been planned weeks prior for the exact date Congress was to certify the 2020 election, which was January 6. The Capitol was attacked by Trump’s supporters who had weapons, assaulted police and broke windows to enter the U.S. Capitol. Members of the U.S. Senate and House had to be evacuated to hidden and secure locations to escape violence. The FBI has been arresting individuals who participated and charging them with federal crimes since January 7.

Rep. Waters, who has been the recipient of Donald Trump’s threats for years and was sent a bomb by Trump supporter Cesar Sayoc. Sayoc was sentenced to 20 years in 2019.

In a December 31, 2020 call with recently fired Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund, Rep. Waters asked questions about security. She is also calling for an investigation into the United States Capitol Police’s response to the attack on the Capitol.

The U.S. Capitol Police must endure a structure that involves many civilian and political entities that can interfere and have a say in how the agency does policing. There is a governing police board that includes the Sergeants at Arms on the House and Senate side and the Architect of the Capitol. Because the U.S. Capitol Police

In a January 7 statement, Waters said, “The assault on the Capitol of the United States of America on January 6, 2020 will go down as one of the darkest days in the history of our nation. The ability of a violent mob to breach what is supposed to be one of the most secure buildings in the world is both concerning and unacceptable. Today, I write to you to join in calling for an investigation into the United States Capitol Police (USCP) and the actions they took or failed to take that led up to the breach.”

“On December 31, 2020, I spoke with Chief Sund for over an hour. In this call, I raised several questions about the security of the Capitol grounds, including the plaza, the chambers, and the house office buildings. In this call, Chief Sund assured me time and time again that the plaza would be absolutely secured,” Congresswoman Waters added.

“The insurrection that transpired due to the lack of preparation by the USCP is without a doubt beneath the level of security that is required to protect the seat of government, our democracy, and all those who serve in it and fight so fiercely for it. We must ensure that nothing like this ever happens again,” Waters concluded.

The U.S. Capitol Police is charged to protect 535 members of Congress. None were injured on January 6.
