“Counting on Us” Free Event Highlights the Importance of Getting Out to Vote

WHAT:

To help encourage Black voters to be civically engaged in the upcoming Nov. 3 presidential, congressional and local elections, Comcast Xfinity presents a free virtual event series focused on the power of Black voices, faith, justice and the importance of voting in the upcoming Nov. 3 presidential election.

The three-part Xfinity 1VOICE 1VOTE series, presented in partnership with the League of Women Voters, kicks off on Thursday with a voter empowerment town hall. The 40-minute “Counting on Us: A Conversation on Faith and the Vote” program will explore the historical intersection of faith, politics and civil rights in the Black religious tradition, and how Black voters can mobilize themselves to reach record turnout this fall. The program will also explore what policies must be adopted in order to attract record numbers of Black voters to the polls and what mobilization tactics will ensure rogue efforts don’t interfere with the Black voters’ ability to have their ballots counted — whether they vote early, absentee, by mail or at the polls — and how Black religious communities can ensure a fair and honest voting process on Nov. 3.

Topics will include the 2020 Census, voter suppression, criminal justice reform, the impact of Black Lives Matter, how and where to vote safely during COVID-19, and the role of race/gender/intersectional representation in leadership (i.e., the impact of Kamala Harris as VP)

WHO: Moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Trymaine Lee, panelists include:

  • Rev. Al Sharpton, national civil rights leader and President of National Action Network
  • Deborah Turner, President of the League of Women Voters
  • Nsé Ufot, Executive Director of the New Georgia Project
  • Rahiel Tesfamariam, an activist, theologian and a former columnist for the Washington Post.

The event concludes with a musical performance by Grammy-nominated gospel artist Deitrick Haddon performing his hit song, “I Can’t Breathe.”

WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.

WHERE: All events will be broadcast on Facebook Live and YouTube Live at: ”https://www.facebook.com/XfinityHomeSessions”
