Labor and Civil Rights Icon Dolores Huerta Endorses Prop. 10

OAKLAND POST — Dolores Huerta said: “Proposition 10 will restore independence and economic justice to millions of Californians. It will give local communities the power to do what’s right for the working poor, women, and children. For more than six decades, I’ve worked with individuals to build their personal power while coupling it with responsibility and cooperation to create the changes needed to improve their lives. Proposition 10 will create the change we need to improve the lives of millions of working Californians.”

Dolores Huerta — labor leader, civil rights icon and founder/president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation (DHF) — and representatives from DHF joined several Yes on 10 “Rent Is Too Damn High!” Bus Tour stops in Bakersfield, Fresno, Parlier, Lamont and Arvin. She urged Californians to vote Yes on Proposition 10.

For more than six decades, I’ve worked with individuals to build their personal power while coupling it with responsibility and cooperation to create the changes needed to improve their lives. Since launching the National Farm Workers Association with Cesar Chavez in 1962 and establishing the Dolores Huerta Foundation in 2003, Dolores Huerta has been organizing to give a voice to forgotten farm workers and low-income families. Improving wages, working conditions, and education equity is essential to securing a better California. Prop 10 is an essential step in these fights because housing is a key component of economic security and community stability.

Prop. 10 is a key step toward solving California’s housing-affordability and homelessness crises as it will protect California’s renters and guarantee landlords a fair rate of return, all while laying the foundation for stronger communities. By empowering local communities to limit rent increases and curtail predatory housing practices, cities and counties will be able to create thoughtful laws to address their local housing situations.

The “Rent Is Too Damn High!” Bus Tour is a statewide grassroots mobilization push to further develop organic person-to-person relationships, hear community housing concerns and raise awareness for the importance of Proposition 10.

To date, the Bus Tour has rallied support for Prop 10 across California, including Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino, San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco, Sacramento, Bakersfield and Fresno. Community leaders and organizations from across the state of California are coming together to engage voters and rally support for Prop. 10 because everyone deserves a safe, healthy and affordable place to call home.
