Do you have a green thumb? If so, former Richmond Mayor Tom Butt is appealing for your help to assist in caring for East Brother Lighthouse’s landscaping and gardens.

Butt said that a group of volunteers is needed to make a monthly commitment to take care of one vegetable garden and drought-tolerant landscaping throughout East Brother Lighthouse’s property.

He said that pre-COVID, a group of volunteers performed these gardening duties and had a Garden Party once per month—including an island picnic.

“We need people who can make a monthly commitment, not a one-time thing,” said the former mayor, adding that they would like to start the Garden Parties up again.

“After the rainy winter, everything is thriving but needs some TLC, pruning and cleanup. We would like to do spring planting in the vegetable garden,” said Butt about their needs. He and his wife, Shirley, both sit on the Board of Directors for East Brother Light Station, which not only features a lighthouse, but also a B&B.

Gardeners who are interested in volunteering can contact the former mayor at tom.butt@intres.com.
