FAMU’s Ammons Resigns Amid Hazing Scandal

Florida A&M University President James Ammons today resigned amid a growing scandal over the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion and resulting criticism over management at Florida’s only public, historically blackuniversity.

Ammons’ resignation, to the university’s board of trustees, comes on the same day that Champion’s parents plan to file a lawsuit blaming the university for the death of their son.

Ammons has been under intense criticism since Champion was beaten to death in a hazing ritual by fellow members of the Marching 100 band on a charter bus in Orlando after the Florida Classic football game in November.
