In this episode of The Color of Our Money Is Green, Roosevelt Gist breaks down Total Cost of Ownership — the real, complete five-year cost of any vehicle, once you add insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration fees, and depreciation on top of your financing. According to AAA’s 2025 Your Driving Costs study, that number averages $11,577 a year — nearly $58,000 over five years — and most of it never shows up in a dealership conversation.
We walk through all six categories that make up total ownership cost, including the one almost nobody calculates before they buy: depreciation, which alone accounts for the single biggest expense of owning a car. We also name the documented research on why two of these categories — insurance and financing — run higher for Black families, citing findings from the Consumer Federation of America and a 2024 D.C. regulatory study on racial disparities in auto insurance pricing.
Then we hand you the complete seven-step framework to calculate the real cost of any vehicle you’re considering, before you sign anything — plus this week’s Green Book Moment, spotlighting Citizens Trust Bank, one of the oldest Black-owned banks in the country.
