Ben’s Chili Bowl, one of Washington, D.C.’s most iconic Black‑owned businesses and cultural landmarks, is preparing to reopen its historic U Street NW location on May 1 following a multi‑year renovation.
First opened in 1968 by Ben and Virginia Ali, Ben’s has long been a cornerstone of the corridor once known as Black Broadway, serving generations of residents, activists, entertainers, and national leaders. The reopening marks not just a return to business, but a celebration of community, family, legacy, and resilience.
